The exam has three stages:

How many papers are there in UPSC Mains?

There are 9 papers in UPSC Mains:
A. 2 Qualifying (Language + English)
B. 1 Essay
C. 4 GS Papers
D. 2 Optional Subject Papers

How many papers and total marks are there in the UPSC Mains Examination?

There are a total of 9 papers in the UPSC Mains Examination. Out of these, the Indian Language and English papers are qualifying in nature (candidates must score at least 25%).


For the final merit, only the following 7 papers with a total of 1750 marks are counted:
Paper 1 – Essay → 250 Marks
Paper 2 – General Studies I → 250 Marks
Paper 3 – General Studies II → 250 Marks
Paper 4 – General Studies III → 250 Marks
Paper 5 – General Studies IV (Ethics) → 250 Marks
Paper 6 – Optional Subject Paper I → 250 Marks
Paper 7 – Optional Subject Paper II → 250 Marks


Note:
Candidates must choose one Optional Subject, which consists of two papers of 250 marks each (total 500 marks).

Therefore, your final ranking is based on a total of 2025 marks.
